As for the number, Brahms did joke to Simrock that the revised version should be "opus 88" rather than 8...


But the current Brahms op. 88 (F-major string quintet) is so great now: IT, ironically, uses for a slow movement main theme some sarabande he wrote in the 1850s too.

no way, I had 88 in my head! But it was that late, wasnt it?
