Copland the Modernist

I cribbed the title of the thread from this CD by Michael Tilson Thomas:

Though he's famous for his neo-romantic Americana, Copland had a pioneering side that is less well known. Pieces like his Piano Variations (1930), Connotations (1962), and Inscape (1967) are fascinating forays into new music styles. I think Copland was a musical genius, and he was much less conservative than his reputation suggests.
