In my opinion, the music alone has to evoke the mood/atmosphere as well as augmenting that given by the pictures of the film.

I'm not sure I agree that a composer is 'elevated' from film to classical composer.

If you have a bad, unsophisticated or "overly lyrical" piece played on violins it is not classical music. If you have a 20 minute piece played by a rock band that has well used materials and developed schemes and themes then perhaps its more classical than half the film scores out there....anyway...

The Last of the Mohicans has a boss sound track!
I totally agree on thematicism, that would mean the composer is standing on the opera tradition that is the ancestor of film music. It's not just writing appropriate music for the emotion but using leitmotivs for the different characters and places. In that sense the score for The Lord of the Rings is classical. No thematic development though.

That said, this is one of my favorite moments in film music:

this music was used in a vlog which made me want to play tablefootball - quite an amazing accomplishment! not able to post it right now, will do as soon as i can

for me, the music stands alone as a great and motivating piece of work.

i haven't seen the film, so i can't tell you about motives etc etc

if i saw and heard this live in a concert hall i think i would be equally impressed.

i would say that film music relates to the film it is written for only. classical music can be taken out of context and still evoke feeling - good or bad.

(appologies for bad punctuation)

Love it. Very dramatic. And fun to watch and play with all the basses going twenty to the dozen.
