I believe HG's a PC man. For BC users who do use Macs: DEACTIVATE JAVA UNTIL A SECURITY UPDATE IS ISSUED.

Thank you for this piece of news! The f-secure site says that I should only be getting one file right after the first step, but Terminal hands me five. "Otherwise, contact customer care"... Still, everything looks fine.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Macs don't get viruses ...

But they can be infected by trojans and malware. Many Mac users are complacent - but Macs are becoming more likely to be targetted and there's no room for complacency. It is worth running a decent programme like Sophos, which is free. It describes itself as an anti-virus programme but it is in fact intended to deal with trojans in particular.

Sadly, Apple is lagging behind Microsoft in issuing a patch for this particular Trojan (there's a joke about jobsworths in there somewhere). No doubt a patch will emerge before long but turning Java off seems like a sensible precaustion. Java is not natively installed in OS X Lion (unlike Snow Leopard) but if you are running programmes that use it you need to be careful
