Default The Phenix City Story (1955 film)

Last nite Turner Classic Movies treated us to life in the sin town of
Phenix City, Alabama in the 1950's. It's across the Chattahoochee River from Columbus, Georgia, site of Fort Benning.

The soldiers from Fort Benning were getting their jollies in typical dives like Red Tanner's Poppy Club in the 14th St. district.
Unlikely that many blokes would be back in the barracks
reading Schopenhauer or partaking of Don Giovanni.
The efficacy of the local police on the Phenix City mob did not leave
much to the imagination.
Events climaxed on 18 June 1954, when a local lawyer,
Albert L. Patterson, running for office of state attorney,
was gunned down.
A successful conclusion had the state militia being called in to finally
restore order and allow Phenix City
to rise again .

During the film there was this quote:

"The only way for Evil to triumph is when good men sit back
and do Nothing."

Default Bush-Cheney redux?

23 May evening's Ed Schultz Show on MSNBC was talking about
if Romney gets elected - it will be a redux of Bush-Cheney.
With the quote:

"Government of the Few, for the Few, and by the Few"

A variation that has been used before is when Few is replaced
by Corporation.
Romney and the Republicans love to say they are job creators
-they sure are - for people in countries outside the U.S.

Following Ed, on Rachel Maddow's show, she described
how odious a character Cheney was.
She recalled when Cheney said to Senator Pat Leahy,
"Go f--- yourself".
Leahy had been talking about Cheney's association with the
oil service firm Halliburton Corp. (lots of biz in Iraq and elsewhere)
Cheney later on a talk show said it was one of his best moments -
as if mouthing off in public is an attribute.
We know they must do it copiously in private.
And the Republicans like to talk about morality; faith-based;
ideals; blah blah blah
The final approval ratings at the end of Bush-Cheney were:

Bush - 22% Cheney - 13%

Quote by Rachel:

"It's amazing that Dick Cheney ever held high office in this country!"

Here are two parts (out of four) of an excellent piano sonata (No. 3) by Paul Hindemith. I'll let you judge the playing.

No problem. I'll enjoy the music and forget who's playing.
