Default Jehan de Lescurel: French 'Trouvère'

Jehan de Lescurel was a medieval poet and composer.

He was a transitional figure from the trouvère period to the ars nova. His lyrical style unites him with the composers of the later period, and they clearly thought highly enough of him to include his music in the same manuscript which preserves the Roman de Fauvel.

I loved telling my students that he had been hanged in 1302 for moral impropriety (assaulting nuns, if I recall it correctly). Then there was an article defending that the guy hanged was not necessarily the musician, because there were so many Johns, and a few Escurels around Paris at the time. Well, it was a good story, and anyway, he seems to have disappeared...

It's one reason I love Jean-Marie Leclair. He genuinely did come to a sticky end.... I've read the police report!
