hey Steve - just a little curious - i have never heard Shostakovich's
Eighth Symphony subtitled 'Stalingrad'
often the Seventh is called 'Leningrad' because he wrote it there
during the siege of Leningrad (1941-42)
as far as i know, Shostakovich wrote the Eighth in a dacha (like a small country house retreat), outside Moscow, in 1943, where composers were sent

The Eighth is probably more cerebral and serious in tone than the Seventh; but not inferring the Seventh is inferior in quality.

by the way, i enjoy the string quartets too

@ Mambo, Re: The Shostakovich 8th, I had seen the Stalingrad in brackets on a couple of listings for this work, but I don't remember where; it is also quite possible I have been mistaken in using this to denote this symphony. I will try to do some further research on it, but in the meantime I shall only refer to it as the 8th Symphony. I agree with your observations as applies to both works. They are very powerful and moving musical statements, as are his SQS, especially Nos.8 and 13.

I know that piano concerto is one of Despina's favorites.

Nice to see you Roehre.
