"Beam Me Over to Norfolk, Scotty!" (from Star Trek)
This is more for science fiction buffs, but contains lots of science too - after all it appears the top brass in the U.S. Navy considered it. The strange case of the U.S. Navy destroyer escort USS Eldredge. It was a project supposed to have been carried out October 1943, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. The purpose was to render the ship invisible by cloaking it in a strong electromagnetic field. The utility co. Philadelphia Electric was probably bitchin' about it. Be interesting to look at their power consumption records in South Philly for October 1943. A more bizarre phenomenon was the possibility of disassembly of the whole ship and its crew into their component particles, beam them to Norfolk, Virginia Naval Shipyard, and reassemble them there! Right now it is science fiction. We can manipulate small amounts of particles - nanotechnology If this could be done on the macroscopic scale, it would be a miraculous occurrence. Almost Supernatural. The story goes under the name of the Philadelphia Experiment. A good read and not that much science. It would be an example of teleportation, like that used in the TV series Star Trek (1966-1969). (be back next week) |

Great picture, Miss Baroque.
I looked at the Philadelphia Experiment over the weekend and the story gets kind of crazier and crazier. Trying to separate fact from fiction. |

Quote:
The story is widely regarded as a hoax. The U.S. Navy maintains that no such experiment occurred, and details of the story contradict well-established facts about the Eldridge, as well as the known laws of physics. ( ) The story has captured imaginations of people in conspiracy theory circles, and they repeat elements of the Philadelphia Experiment in other government conspiracy theories. There seems to be more fiction than fact.
