Default Numbering of the Symphonies

I know I'm opening a big can of worms but here goes anyway.

Can any of you point me to a guide to the numbering of Schubert's symphonies. I've got the box of 8 (sic) symphonies by Karl Boehm/Berlin. There is no No. 7 in this box. The Unfinished, here No. 8, is apparently referred to as No. 7 in at least some places. The Great is No. 9, which I think is the consensus. But the Great is also referred to as some other number, again in some other context that I'm unable to specify. The liner notes, translated from German, are murky. The Wiki page on Schubert barely discusses the numbering issue.

So what's the general consensus? How many symphonies are there? Is there truly no No. 7? Strange that these questions have to be asked.

Schubert left a number of unfinished symphonies when he died (apart from the famous 'Unfinished').

The symphony that would have become 'No 7' was left in very sketchy form and is, therefore, not performed. There have been attempts to recreate it, but these have proved unsuccessful and haven't caught on.

This is why there's a 'gap' at No 7. There have been efforts to re-number Schubert's last two symphonies as No 7 (the famous Unfinished) and No 8 (the Great C major), but this tends to add to the confusion rather than solve anything.
