Today I've listened to:

Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis; Sinfonia antartica
Malcolm Arnold - Symphony No. 4

Yesterday evening I listened to Arnold's Fifth Symphony.

Many of these budget EMI "two-fer" sets are absolutely brilliant performances. Such is certainly true of this Jean Martinon recording of Debussy that I have just finished (I have volume 2 as well). This recording offers an interpretation clearly different (less Modernist?) from Boulez (who I also have)... a truly marvelous interpretation nonetheless.

As a great lover of "art song" I finally got around to getting something by Lori Laitman... a composer best known for her song settings of contemporary and classical poetry. She is often compared to Ned Rorem... who may be the leading American composer of "art song". So far I find what I've heard to be quite strong. The music beautifully brings out further layers of meaning to the text through the exploration of a range of colors, moods, textures while remaining ever accessible.
