I would be surprised to hear that Europe has no "classics-only" musical conservatives/dilettantes who can't stand atonal music and anything after...

Evidently. I understood you to mean that 'anti-arnoldism' was particularly prevalent in the concert-going milieu in the USA, more so than in Europe. What I wish to say is that there are many contemporary music festivals in Europe, and Schoenberg is no stranger there.

For a long time I believed Schoenberg's middle name was "anti-music."

To quote myself, here's a link to a contemporary music festival in Strasbourg I shall be attending. And the opening concert on September 21st? Check it out for yourselves.

The Musikfest Berlin is doing Moses und Aron next month. The Fest admits that the three works they're performing (Cage and Gershwin are also on the program) are "opera rarities."

Many years ago, I told myself that I would know the end was near when I began to appreciate and enjoy MundA. Not a value judgment on the tastes of others; more or less an admission of personal defeat at the hands of Arnold.

I can do Gurrelieder.....(and that quite well), Berg's Lulu and even the occasional Adès effort; but the biblical Schoenberg scares me mightily still. I suppose that means I have a few years left to me.

Default About this opera

I listened to it many many years ago... Let's say...thirty....
I like this opera, what I find heavy is the mass choral stuff... Like Gregorian chant a bit. Schönberg and his disciple, Egon Wellesz had studied deeply this kind of old music... The result is kind of boring... This is too long... we "need" this ballet a bit less dodecaphonic in order to better appreciate ths music, if any.

So if it were less like Moses und Aron, you'd appreciate it more? That's fair.
