The Berlin Philharmonic has launched the world's first digital concert hall, which will broadcast its performances live on the internet and has the potential to widen the audience from a few hundred to millions around the world...

Under the slogan Any Place, Any Time, music lovers are being invited to take a front-row seat at the mustard-yellow concert hall from January at a cost of €9.99 (£9.50) for 48 hours' access, or €149 for a season of about 30 concerts. They will also be given access to an archive of previous performances.

It's such an obvious thing to do. How long before all major orchestras are doing this?

Planned are 30 Live concerts in 2009 (whereby three concerts will be for free). The orchestra will need roughly three years and around 5.000 to 7.000 users to take profits as they say. That's difficult to understand, just to compare costs and efforts: the CSO provides a project named Beyond The Score explaining great musical works with a rather elaborate video montage, narrators etc.. The costs of these (a subscription costs 5,- $ per session, some are free to download) streams are said to be just around 20.000 Dollars.

Just in case you don't know it yet, check it out: I'm no big fan of the Tchaikovsky montage, but the introduction to The Miraculous Mandarin is simply terrific.

What a terrific enterprise. I shall have to seriously consider signing up.

And Reiner, as fascinating as that article was, I don't think we should hold the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's Nazi history against it in these modern times.

It reminds me of a passage from Clive James's book Cultural Amnesia, a book notable for its tedious obsession with twentieth century dictators, mass deaths and debacles, where he thoroughly and pompously excoriates various prominent artists (including musicians like Strauss and Furtwaengler) for not explicitly condemning/opposing the Nazi regime (the constantly implication is James thinks they ought to have sacrificed themselves).
