Default Die Schoene Muellerin in English

Hi folks, new poster here. I've long been interested in alternate translations of lieder and opera. For example, I've got several operas in English, Das Lied von der Erde in Russian, things like that. More to the point, I also have the Jeffrey Benton Winterreise in English.

But what I'm looking for now is a recording of Die schoene Muellerin in English. I am aware of the Gehrman recording, which I ordered last night from Amazon in a probable exercise in self-flagellation. This is apparently one of the worst examples of vocal art since, well, ever. But it was cheap and I want to hear it at least once.

Are there any other recordings of DsM in English out there? Are there any other recordings of Winterreise in English other than Benton's?

Virginia

Welcome virginia, nice to meet you. My ignorance of Schubert lieder is bottomless so I'll leave an expert to reply.

Hi Virginia,

I think there're at least two songs of the Winterreise sung by John McCormack in English (it's with the participation of Fritz Kreisler, so it's not what you were searching for. But better than nothing), anyway, I couldn't find them. But searching for it, I found a list of Schubert-Lieder as mp3's, some of them are performed in English, unfortunately nothing of the Winterreise or the Schöne Müllerin. Anyway, some are sung by real Schubert veterans (Schwarzkopf, Seefried, Hotter etc.).

If you scroll down here on Ian Partridge's site you'll find at least an English version of Erstarrung from Die Winterreise as mp3. The site of his broadcastings mentions a complete cycle of Die Winterreise in English plus a longer interview about translating Schubert to English.

Welcome to Bright Cecilia, Virginia!

I'm glad to see someone else with an open-minded approach to translations for song and opera I hope you find a Schoene Muellerin in English. After all, it's not like they burned the German one first, is it?
