Because it was to be read out loud with the other three words, thus the space.

That's right! movement two of the second piano concerto!

It's in D minor, so it would have made sense as an exploration of the stormy D minor passages in the first movement.

Oh well, it's good where it is, and the Violin Concerto has a certain 3-movement perfection of form that the second Piano Concerto lacks, so... Good job, Joachim.

I was just reading back on this thread and initially Despina was talking about "Romantic" violin concertos and then she turned it into the best violin concerto PERIOD. I'm going to say that I've been listening to the VC's that I have and I'm going to say that Berg's VC is my favorite.

Now I admit that I only have the Anne-Sophie Mutter version of it (I think), but I really do like it. Mendelssohn is good but grows a bit tiring on repeated playings. Brahms's is good textually, but somehow I just don't get that "oomph" listening to it. Berg's does it for me!!

To compare the Brahms concerto with the Berg is a bit unfair for Berg. The Brahms concerto is a corner stone in the repertoire. If it's really about ranking and "the best" in all qualities (and I know that wasn't intended), the Brahms has just one mighty rival in my book. And comparing the Beethoven & the Brahms concerti is a bit like ranking Faust and Hamlet.

The Violin Concerti of Ligeti and Robert Saxton are very good. I am yet to hear Oliver Knussen's very recent Violin Concerto.

As far as I'm concerned it ISN'T.

There is one truism that I've learned in life. Actually there are several but in this regard. "When one person knows an overwhelming amount more than another about a given subject, they will always win a debate even if they are incorrect.".

So following that truism I have no chance in this discussion. The second thing, is that the initial statement is flawed. There is no such thing as "best". This is just a game for fun. Music in the end is subjective. When I say I like something, there isn't anything ANY one can say because that is how I feel.

As far as I'm concerned it is not romantic. Period.

whoa whoa, buddy! Didn't mean to get you upset. Peace!
No offense was intended, I was just trying to make a joke. I happen to hear the Berg as having a certain lyrical quality -- as opposed to Webern, for example -- so yes, call it's technically modern or atonal, 12-tone one of those, whatever, but it sounds Romantic, capital R to me.

As for the "best" this or that... well, one needs to be outrageous anymore to get some responses around here. Obviously it's my opinion, but I'm too lazy to write "IMO" after every sentence.
