Smile Other than Baroque , which period do u like most?

Personally , my all time favourite period is baroque
(especially those composer with similar age as Bach)

And , my 2nd favourite is the pre-classical period
(the period before mozart appear)
in these period , the instrument used are still similar to those in baroque , although the music expression is changed .

Although , Renaissance Music also share the polyphonic music nature like baroque , but i just think its instrumental music is still a little bit raw , and not mature enough . Although , its church music (e.g.mass) is great

So , what is your 2nd favourite period of classical music?

sorry for my poor english , as i am not a native speaker

Great question!!!!

My favorite is probably still Romantic but it's closely followed by the Modern of the first few decades of the 20th century.

The best analogy I know for that is when Coke introduced Diet Coke in the states. People had a negative reaction to Diet Coke at first because it doesn't taste as sweet. (Actually, has kind of a "bite" to it). People kept drinking, however, because of the 0 calories. Now, alot of people can't stand the taste of the original Coke because they say it tastes too sweet.

That's the way it is with me now. I have to have that "bite" of the modern music frequently.

Mostly music from symbolism upwards to today. Maybe the 1920's/30's as favorites, such a creative breakup.

Well Shostakovitch is my favourite composer, but I love Renaissance music as well as Baroque.

My least favourite composer is Harrison Birtwhistle. I've tried, I really have but I can't get on with him at all.

Dame Hilda,
perhaps you can give me some guidance on CD's of Shostakovitch String Quartets. It's a gaping hole in my collection.

Before Dame answers a little advertisement:
Emerson is nice, but doesn't come even close to this one:
[ame]http://www.amazon.com/Dmitri-Shostakovich-Complete-Quartets-Remaster/dp/B000001HDU/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top[/ame]

Recently reissued by Melodiya (~30 €), plus you get the piano quintet with Richter as an encore (and this recording alone is worth the $). There're two cycles of the Borodin quartet, the elder one (Chandos) is the more intense one IMO, but you can't go wrong with this one. The Chandos issue has the disadvantage, that the last two quartets hadn't been recorded due to problems inside of the ensemble.
Shostakovich collaborated closely with the Borodin quartet, the recordings are first hand experiences.

If you prefer it in a more desperate way, listen to the Beethoven-quartet. They premiered quite a lot of the quartets, the sound quality is dreadfull though.
