Thanks so much.

My wife got a call from a friend working at an animal shelter a couple of years ago. She said there was a nice brown and white cat there who was going to be put down if no one adopted him that day, a story that successfully tugged at our heartstrings. The skinny boy was completely declawed, but nonetheless we told ourselves he might help with the minor mouse problem in our flat.

Flaco wandered obsessively all around the house for a day, getting stuck in very odd spots in his attempts to escape. In one instance, my son had to retrieve him from a remote and dusty part of the attic. The next morning we realized he was nowhere to be found, and had probably slipped away when we returned from a youth hockey game late the previous night. For the next week all our attempts to locate him were in vain.

Heartbroken as well as unsure of what to do with all this brand new cat equipment, we went and adopted a gray tabby kitten from a shelter. Bringing little Flyer up the back steps for the first time, who should we encounter in the darkness but no-longer-long-lost Flaco?

As the picture above suggests, the two have learned to get along but aren't particularly affectionate. Flaco is the friendly host who makes the rounds during parties and gets his due attention from the guests while Flyer hides. She's the champion huntress who rids the house of mice, flies, spiders, and dragonflies (no birds yet) while Flaco lounges on the ironing board. Since we're finally starting to get nice weather hereabouts, the cats are enjoying sunning themselves on the back porch all day.

My husband's dog goes mad with joy when he sees Flo. I think when he dreams he dreams of running through cornfields with her. The cat is my dear little cat who is the most affectionate cat I have owned. I think he dreams of curling up asleep in a sunny spot.

Ohhh, Dame Hilda! I've only just seen your lovely post. And what a fantastic photo of quite the best dog and cat around. I must come and see you all very soon. X

Typical!

Great story. I'm glad they both found a good home.
