I've never heard of Lobos-Cobos... but I should imagine-
he'd be the ideal conductor for Wolf-Ferrari! ![]() But seriously, folks.... I think it would be interesting to reveal my choices a little bit at a time. Let me begin by saying that I agree with the OP on Das Lied with Klemperer and the (New) Philharmonia...

Cobos/Cinc/Telarc is very fine.
The LSO/Solti on LP is amazing for its sound quality.

The live recording with Kubelik is my favorite, though it's a close run with the Klemperer/Ludwig/Wunderlich recording.
Is anybody familiar with Schönberg's transcription of the work for chamber orchestra? |

I have the recording with Herreweghe, in fact Schönberg transcribed just the first movements for what I know, the last ones were added later on. It received hymnic reviews concerning the transparency of the score in the press, so I purchased it. I was mildly disappointed to be honest, it lacks some sound colors (well, of course it does with just 13 or 14 instruments) in passages where I think they are more than vital for the music. Especially the last movement is lacking this mysterious peaceful atmosphere.
But it's certainly an interesting recording. I'm more than happy with the orchestral version. If you want me to, I can upload a little appetizer of it before you order it - so what for a type are you? Drunken? Lonely? Spring chicken? Beauty? Drunken again? |

jeez - I thought the whole time this thread is just all about the "Lied von der Erde"...
ok - here the rest: 1 Kubelik/BR 2 Klemperer/NY 3 Bernstein/NY 4 Klemperer/PO (ravishing Schwarzkopf) 5 Solti/CSO (simply sensational) 6 Bernstein/VP 7 Solti/Chicago 8 never listen to it 9 Giulini/CSO (simply sensational) 10 maybe Ormandy/PO I'd love to see alternatives to my 5 and 9 - I doubt these two can be topped, but if...
