Here's a couple of quotes that are right at the top of my homepage on my official website they've been there for years. Nice, eh?

Quote:
I'm supposed to be a serious composer but unless you're Beethoven or Wagner that would seem like a very odd opinion to have of oneself.
Quote:
I have a little life philosophy which runs something like this: anyone who takes themselves seriously cannot be serious.

At one point in a rehearsal she asked the 1st. trumpet player to "blaze out like the first rays of sun at day break." To which the trumpeter who was a working class kid from Lancaster replied, "you mean louder?"

I laughed out loud at that!

I guess the problem I have with Pablo moaning or Jarret whinnying or whoever else cracks their teeth or snorts or whatever, is that it is an additional sound or note that gets in the way of me hearing the music.
I've got 4 or 5 Keith Jarret CDs but I just can't stand them anymore.

Really, think of the opening of the Goldberg variations. The opening.
I'm sorry but I don't need some performer going meeeeoeeuuuh during it anymore than I want some jerk next to me unrapping a plastic wrapped candy or coughing.

Great story about that snotty conductor. What a dork.

Yes, sigh, I know.
At least on the second recording of the Goldberg Variations its somewhat subdued. (maybe they put a glass screen betwixt him and the piano.

Its too bad, cause the guy was demonically good!

We tend to infer from this sort of behaviour that the performer is saying "look at me! I am so caught up with the spirituality, or sexuality, or whatever, of what I am doing that I must groan like a rutting stag."

Which begs the question: "Why doesn't everybody do it, then?"

But maybe some people really can't help it and aren't aware they are doing it. Obviously no one would have suggested that Glenn Gould shouldn't play because he couldn't stop making noises.

I don't know. To play brilliantly takes tremendous discipline. How much more discipline does it take not to go oooaaaarrrrr when you're playing?

Maybe the problem is that people are too scared to say: "Yes, wonderful, but let's try that again without the mooing."

Presumably with two little holes for his hands to go through!
