When I was at university I had an hysterical landlady for a while - the was no other word for her: flying off the handle, screaming, shouting weeping, calling on God to intervene in her miserable life (she actually had quite a good life) - who sang in a local choir. When she returned from choir practise it was the only time she was calm and happy. I realised that for some people singing is controlled or licensed screaming. Off she went to choir practice, screamed her heart out, and felt a lot better.

I do! I first ran up against them at a family friend's when I was about 6, they were in French & I couldn't understand them: so frustrated till I could get the English versions!

That's how I felt during bits of Doctor Atomic.... when Adams made a trillster sing another diminished seventh interval.

What a great dog he is. I like the way he goes everywhere, and they make no bones () about building him a little space-dog suit for the moon trip.

I think a 'great dogs of literature' would be great thread. And 'dogs of History'.

What were your favourites? I think mine would've been the Voyage of the Unicorn/Red Rackham's Treasure duo, but if I had to choose a single one probably Tintin in Tibet (my partner spent 8 years in Bhutan and says it's very true to life!)

Unsurprisingly, opera was one of Hergé's pet hates. Helsingin Sanomat suggested in October 2008 that Castafiore was modelled after Aino Ackte, a Finnish soprano.

My favorites were:

Cigars of the Pharaoh
King Ottokar's sceptre
Tintin in the Congo (of course )
Destination Moon
and...

The Castafiore Emerald.

Of course I read only in Flemish
