BNP to admit non-white members

The far-right British National party has agreed to change its constitution to allow non-white people to join, it emerged today.

The BNP confirmed it would consider changes to its rules and membership criteria after the Equality and Human Rights Commission launched county court proceedings against the party's leader, Nick Griffin, and two other party officials: Simon Darby and Tanya Jane Lumby.

Robin Allen QC, counsel for the commission, said Griffin had agreed to present members with a revised constitution at its general meeting next month.

Publicity stunt before Griffin goes on Question Time? Still, the very fact that they've had to change their constitution to effect this says it all.

I thought that would be the case.

As a student union sabbatical officer I was nominally a member of all clubs and societies, including lesbian and gay, afro caribbean, arab, muslim, jewish and so on. Naturally, I didn't go to meetings or interfere with their policies and nobody had a problem with the setup, which was constitutional and lawful, just like the NBPA.

The BNP's position wasn't lawful; now it is. Given that being a violent racist doesn't constitute being in an oppressed minority to anyone (except other violent racists), I hope the public doesn't exercise the same level of discretion and good manners towards the BNP's membership policy.

Membership
Membership to the Association is available to all black staff employed by the Metropolitan Police Service. There are three categories of membership available:

Full Membership
Full membership is open to all serving police officers and police staff directly employed by the MPS or the Metropolitan Police Authority who meets the criteria set out in the constitution of the Association.

Associate Membership
Associate membership is open to all serving police officers and police staff directly employed by a constabulary or police authority within the UK, who are not part of the Metropolitan Police Service, and police staff employed by outsourced contractors whose main role is to support the Metropolitan Police Service.

I believe that I am not mistaken in reading, under the "Membership" heading, the following:

Sure, membership is available to all black London rozzers. But whitey Old Bill can join too! I was a union official in a London borough (a long time ago ) where we had big union-run Irish and womens groups. I'm neither Irish nor female but was invited automatically to every meeting. I hardly ever went but I remember the Irish group as effective and hilarious.

There were problems with alcoholism within the Irish workforce and we constructed, claimed, negotiated, and signed an agreement with the employer to encourage them to help, as opposed to sack, dipsomaniac Fenians. Most of the drafting work took place in the pub....

If black London fuzz did have some nasty little secret society going, open only to blacks, inviting racist guest speakers such as Louis Farrakhan to their meetings, I'd be the first to condemn it.

But it's simply not true. It's a Daily Mail 'PC (sic) gone mad' myth or lie - like straight bananas and the EU - put about by disgruntled whites who fear race equality in British policing (I don't mean you of course).

Oh Lordy, British Muslim cops are at it too!

A detailed membership list of the British National party containing names, addresses and telephone numbers was published on the internet this morning....

A Guardian analysis of the data suggests the BNP had 11,560 members as of April this year, including one peer and several doctors and military personnel. The party appears to have benefited from a surge in female recruits, with one in eight party members now women.
