We've now got a right-handed flute but left-handed fiddle and recorder.
But the fiddle and the recorder are oversized! So I think I was right presuming that these instruments were not painted at the same time as the boy.

You're right, that is a big fiddle. Maybe it's a viola?

It's possible that it's a differently sized violin - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I5hzvhnK00"]YouTube - Les 24 Violons du Roy episode 1/6[/ame]

the one in the painting looks like a Dutch violin with a Renaissance / early Baroque bow with ivory tip...

Great thread.

I have always (well, since the age of 16) played left handed guitars. I wish I had learned right handed, to be honest, as it would have made instruments far more widely accessible. With acoustics, you can turn the bridge and the strings around quite easily, but on electrics the knobs get in the way.

How could I tell from this picture if the flautists were (in reality) left or right handed?

You bet. The final Presto is a sort of weird, aggressive, Gipsy or Turkish dance, some of it set over a bagpipe-like drone. Very exciting to play or see live.
