Interesting to learn recently that the Neanderthals might not have been quite so, er, Neanderthal as we previously thought.

Still, we've got enough trouble living with each other. Just imagine if there were another human or humanoid species on the planet to contend with.

(I often wonder what would happen if there were two more or less equally intelligent and culturally evolved species concurrently living on earth, between whom interbreeding - even of the infertile mule variety - was impossible, and probably undesired.)

Thanks, it is interesting and instructive. I am afraid to look eccentric, therefore I'm silent about much. But.... if it is interesting to you, many explanations can be found in "Secret Doctrine", Blavatskaya.
These men are described in detail, but... it is very complex thing for understanding of simple reader. I tried to understand for some years this book.
And something have found there.

There is a certain order in development of each evolutionary quality of mankind. And in history of mankind (according to Blavatskaya) was the period (Atlantis) when evolutionary laws have been broken , and the part of mankind has lagged of general process (having remained in bodies of very developed monkeys).
They are animal, but very developed (with a rudiment of reason).
And somebody - men in lower level of development.
