Mambo will become famous soon enough
Default 9-3 listening

Will revisit Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet, Op.110 ,performed by the Beethoven Quartet. Had seen it mentioned recently along with his Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a - which might be a takeoff
on Op.110. But could not find Op 110a among a list of works for
Shostakovich.

Opus 110a is an orchestration (for string orchestra and timpani) of the quartet opus 110 by Rudolf Barshai, and published with Shostakovich's blessing as Chamber symphony opus 110a.
That's why op.110a isn't part of the "official" work list of Shostakovich's.
Barshai also orchestrated the quartets op.49 (strings), 73 (strings plus winds and brass) and 118 (strings) - all three of them after Shostakovich's death.
All these four Kammersymphonien are worth a listening.
DGG as well as Briliant have these works in their catalogues.

I've been away for a few days but I haven't stopped listening!

The LisztCollection is an amazing collection, especially at the price. The packaging couldn't be better. The CD's come in cardboard sleeves, not the paper ones and the disks do not seem to get stuck inside the cardboard like some do that you practically have to scratch the CD to get out.

The only real negative for this set is the lack of any libretto for the lieder. I mean, 4 or 5 CD's that I don't know what their saying. I don't care if I have to download it, but none at all is unaccecptable to me. I'd rather them put something else in its place.

A little bit of unevenness in the piano playing but with so many peformers that could be expected. None that are bad, overall above average on the piano playing.

So my rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars. ---- I gotta have that libretto.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest I've been listening to:

Christina Pluhar--'Nuff said.

On the Naxos, the music was fine as, of course, was Susan Alexander-Max, however, the sound man wasn't haven't having a good day that day. I'd probably look elsewhere. The Chandos is fine in eevery way.

Recommended, especially if your starting with Carter. Start here.

I decided that since I had so much fun listening to Liszt, that I might have a go at another composer. I haven't listened to a wole lot of Beethoven so I think that will be my composer for Sept.

I'm starting my listening with the Gulda sonata cycle.

I was wondering what everyone's favorite Beethoven Symphony cycle is??? Thanks!
