Where I am, this whole issue of speaking properly is a favorite topic of debates. We speak a colloquial form of English, which is an affectionate mix of phrases from local languages and dialects with English. It's something we hate to love, many think it makes us sound silly.
At some point, we all agree that "street speak" is not the problem, but the ability to "code switch". Then again, throwing in one of those well-loved phrases even during formal events can immediately liven up the party, and you would hardly be considered less intelligent. I guess the key is in knowing the audience and finding the appropriate setting.

I understand what you are saying, but as a professional in a techinical industry, the inability of people to communicate effectively is a problem that is both frustrating, and expensive.
There is a reason we have dictionaries, and schools, and standardized english. These things are in place so that people can understand each other.
