Exactly! Same with Gorecki's Third. Love the piece to death, but boy is it a downer! Even all those A Major chords at the end can't turn that ship around after it has sailed.

EDIT: You know it's funny you should mention Gorecki because micrologus (and maybe you) were talking about his music not too long ago and I turned on the Sample of his Third and turned it right off!

The Third is a really brilliant work... but you have to be in the right mood for it. If you haven't heard it all the way through, it's worth it... just hide the sharp knives and sleeping pills before you do!

Yeah, actually I intend to. I just bought a whole slew of stuff I need to obsorb but next go around I'll definitely include him.

I've always trusted your judgement on these things.

Even if I could afford one, I haven't got the harpsichord space.) I'll tell you a secret. Sometimes if I get really stressed at work (and we have one particular character who does tend to cause stress in others, though she means very well), I go and hide in the ladies' loos or the photocopier room, and I sing Handel. For me, Handel is the very best thing to sing for stress relief!
I was at Leeds University at the time, and the Music Dept kindly let me have access to one of their harpsichords.

Well, music therapy is "real" at least insofar as people get degrees in it:

Whether it "works" or not is another story. But I think the same can be said of psychotherapy.

and if I had to choose: music therapy all the way!

In these types of things, a key factor is specifying what "works" means. You have a "cure" and then you have something short of a cure. (Where the ailment no longer exists).

I listen to music, of course, for a number of reasons but on this subject I listen because I feel better when I listen to it. It helps with depression. So for ME that's success, even if it's not a cure.

For someone else, they may have different expectations so it would be different.
