And you equate truth with trolling. Like I said, this place is anti-intellectual. "Is Brightcecilia less bright? We sure hope so!" This is what I hear you saying.

1. You forgot to capitalize the first letter of truth.

2. How did Truth get involved? What are you talking about? Do you mean "Everything I say is True and if you disagree with me your statements are False." ? Because that's how you seem to have understood our interactions with you when you first showed up and started grandstanding about Beauty and historical Truth and whatever else it was.. Beethoven of Stamitz have been involved; I can't be bothered to look it up.

3. Not anti-intellectual. Just anti-anti-humor.

The truth about this discussion is that Philidor said "if hormonal teenagers want to infest the place, and make OCD lists, they're welcome", then I said "case in point, critical thinking is now being equated with obsessive compulsive disorder", then you said "best troll ever".

My characterization of Philidor's comment was true, and your characterization of my comment was false.

What is really going on is that you are not even responding to the comment of mine that you quoted, but to something else that I said which you cannot be bothered to quote, but can be bothered to harass me for.

If not, then what are you talking about?

Oh, I see. You seem to think you made a True statement when you said that "critical thinking is being equated with OCD."

Philidor didn't say anything about critical thinking, however. He only mentioned OCD lists made by teenagers. You seem to be suggesting that one engages in critical thinking when making lists of "Best" this or that. I am suspicious that critical thinking goes into such lists.

Besides, if you can find an example of teenagers engaging in ANY critical thinking... please let us know.

This an example of both of you engaging in stereotyping. Was Mozart not engaging in critical thinking when composing, as a teenager? He certainly was. If teenagers are listening to classical music, that basically qualifies as critical thinking these days.

It seems like many of you equate sophistication with sarcasm, while I equate it with sincerity. So here we have a failure to communicate.

And thus returning us to my earlier post "anti-anti-humor." I shouldn't be surprised, though, if someone who believes in absolute Truth has trouble recognizing a joke.

Whether or not your stereotype is intended to be humorous is beside the point, because it is anti-intellectual either way. You cannot be sincere and sarcastic at the same time, especially in writing. Then it becomes a way of insulting people or being obscurant to the point, with the clause of "I was only kidding, you dummy" to fall back on. Nonsense.

Black and White

2 + 2 = 4

Right and Wrong

Sweeping General Statements of "X is Y" (Today's special: "Beethoven is Timeless")

zzzzzzzzzz

and that is why we don't want lists of Top Ten Piano Concertos, etc.

So you admit that you are anti-intellectual. I did not make sweeping statements, you did.

You need to define "anti-intellectual."1 So far I think I've gathered that it involves being extremely serious and making no jokes, using no stereotypes, BUT making lists of great composers.

That requires some unpacking.

1 Because in "intellectual" discussion, it is usually recognized by parties that concepts and terms can have varying meanings. But I think I am wasting my time here.
