Today, Beethoven piano Sonata ('Les Adieux') played by Alfred Brendel. I just ADORE this sonata, especially the triumphant and jubilant ending. No matter how far I roam in my listening I ALWAYS go back to Beethoven. He's the touchstone.

Brendel's performance is dynamic and, as usual, revealing. Lacking the hard-driven edge of Pollini, Brendel can be compelling, tender and sensitive.

Does anyone know of a composition earlier than this that contains equally extensive use of the whole-tone scale?
