I've owned this recording for quite a while, but it always seemed to me that Gould without the creaky stool or sotto voce mutterings simply wasn't worthwhile. But eventually it all made sense. Zenph has done Gould-lovers everywhere an enormous service.

The recording must be heard to be believed, and even then..........

Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.5 in D Minor, Op.47 and Symphony No.9 in E-Flat Major, Op.70. The 5th is performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra, whilst the 7th features the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Both are under the baton of Bernard Haitnik.
