I watched La Traviata tonight with Teresa Stratas and Placido Domingo.

I'm sure everyone on the board had seen The Nutcracker except me but I got my chance this morning. There are a number of versions of this out there on DVD but the one I watched is really good. Put on by the Royal Ballet. This particular version also has a number of bonus "behind the scene" clips that I have not watched yet. I have a new Christmas tradition now.

It really was wonderful. Actually, I loved the entire second act.

One rather interesting side note about the finale. Jonathan Cope, who I have seen in a couple of other ballets (most notably The Firebird) is paired with Miyako Yoshida. Ms. Yoshida is a replacement for the original female dancer that was supposed to be paired with Cope but pulled out. Cope is tall and Ms. Yoshida is short. They both do a seemingly flawless job but the height differences looks a bit awkward at times.

Nina Ananiashvili, who gave her final performance with American Ballet Theater, in “Swan Lake,” taking bows Saturday at the Metropolitan Opera House with her daughter, Helene.

The tender affection felt by both colleagues and audiences for the ballerina Nina Ananiashvili is extraordinary. Other ballerinas are no less admired, but she, singularly endearing, is singularly cherished.

This love affair reached its peak at the Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday night, when she gave her farewell performance with American Ballet Theater, in the full-length “Swan Lake.” This is a ballet that most ballerinas and their partners like to follow by adopting the drained-by-emotion “We have given all” look of artistic martyrdom (in keeping with the fact that “Swan Lake” ends with the double suicide of heroine and hero and an apotheosis in which they are reunited in love). Not so with Ms. Ananiashvili.
