Just wanted to say that I watched Giselle. I had just watched Swan Lake so it wasn't quite up to that but I liked it, especially the second half. Next I have Sleeping Beauty and Coppelia to watch.

My favorite ballet: Cydalise et le chèvre-pied by Gabriel Pierné
I never saw it performed because they ran out of fauns.

I am a self-confessed late-comer to ballet - I only really began to take an interest after I moved to Russia, errr, 9 years ago now.

The attitude to ballet music in Russia differs quite seriously from Britain - none of that stuff about "send a load of deps, it's only ballet" applies, and very serious conductors vie to conduct ballet.

Some of the most interesting stuff I have seen whilst here (luckily you can still get the cheap seats at the Bolshoi for about 20 euros, but you have to scour the ticket-kiosks for these) has been the lesser-known Stravinsky ballets - Agon and Apollon Musagete. These were commissioned by and choreographed by Balanchine, and the choreography survives - so we're seeing mostly what the "creative team" behind these ballets intended.

The other thing the Bolshoi has done recently is a string of the Shostakovich ballets - BOLT, THE BRIGHT BROOK and THE GOLDEN AGE. BRIGHT BROOK stands out head-and-shoulders above the others, but they are all top-flight works that aren't heard enough abroad.
