Thanks for the link. I listened to the first five. Of course it was just enough to want me to listen to more!

I also found this I thought you might be interested in about that CD:

I fell in love with this work several years ago and have it on LP by EMI, but unfortunaly it's not the full version.

micrologus, I just looked up this recording on the Fanfare website and they indicate that this CD is a complete recording. It is on one of the reviewers "Want List" for 2001. That would indicate that it was released in 2001 because they make those towards the end of each year.

Quote from Fanfare: (Want List for Adrian Corleonis [2001])

Quote:
The heedless nonsense too often spoken about the timelessness of great music is belied by its power to transport us vividly, redolently, to remote times and places—to that opulent belle époque twilight, say, through which polite audiences were delighted by yet another elegantly confected Watteau evocation in Pierné's piquant Cydalise et le chèvre-pied, now available in its first complete recording;

Fascinating thread.

Flo, your attitude to dance as an art form astounds me, truly. How can you not respect the creativity in being able to move one's body in such a beautiful way? I know that there can be a physical price to pay - feet suffering the most - and that eating disorders abound among ballerinas. Nonetheless, there's real art at work here. And suggesting that it's not in some way intellectual has to be a slight on ballet's dedicated performers.

To return to the OP, my favourite must always be Swan Lake. I've seen it danced (by a Russian company, which was wonderful), and it was the first complete recording I ever bought, as I explained when I joined this forum. Never mind that Tchaikovsky practically wrote it to order. Listen to the music, be moved by the dancing, and fall in love with ... yes, I'll say it ... this incredible, enduring art form.

I must join Kuhlau in admiration of SWAN LAKE. It's far removed from the sugary confection ias which it's sometimes claimed... for me it's in the same vein as the gothic nightmare genre as THE TALES OF HOFFMANN. If anyone remembers the closing moments of OH HAPPY MAN... in which the mad scientist has cloned human into the body of a pig? Rotbart is just the same kind of madman. It ought - if properly produced - to be terrifying. The scene in which Odette is smashing her wings to a bloody pulp against the palace windows during the wedding of 'Odile' is like something from Edgar Allen Poe....
